"that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you." - Matthew 6:18
The purpose of fasting is not to avoid eating food and losing weight and getting into the best physical looks that you can possibly get into. I mean yes, you can do that for health reasons and achieve that difficult to attain weight and health benefits. But that kind of fasting is called dieting and nothing to do with God.
The purpose of fasting is to get closer to God. There are 3 main components to a spiritually led fasting:
1. A Topic: When you fast you have to fast with a purpose. You have to want to bring something unto which you as fasting for. This can be anything from praying for yourself, others, your church, the nation, etc.
2. Giving up Something: When fasting you must want to give something up to bring as a sacrifice to your intent and seriousness of the fast. Many people will do food, and in recent times we have seen people adding certain activities or distractions. But this shows you will to want to put something on the table and relying on God to control your urges to eat food or allow the distraction.
3. Connecting With God: Connecting with God is achieved in multiple ways connected with prayer. Fasting is praying and seeking your connection with God and interceding for your request (or the reason for the fasting - your topic). With it you can read the Bible, meditate, and even listen to sermons.
4. A Secret: Fasting should be done between you and God. You should not have to be telling everyone that you are fasting and no one should know. That is unless you are having someone join you in the fast. Being together in one accord seeking the Lord for some answers or presence.
The most important thing is to keep your relationship with God, your connection with God, and your prayer to remain at the forefront of your fasting. It is vital to fasting with intention. Following these four key aspects of fasting will make for a grand connection between you and Jesus. You will see mountains move, storms calm down, and miracles occur that you thought impossible.
